Right Under Your Nose

My friend pinged me on Facebook yesterday.

“I’m thinking about teaching a class on using social media to broadcast information about entertainment..”

She asked if I had ever heard about Skillshare.

I told her yes, I was aware of what they do; it’s a very cool business model. We all have a talent or skill; we are all good at something.  You are a wizard with Ruby on Rails. You can change a carb on a 65 Chevelle. You can make sushi at home taste just like the stuff at a restaurant.

You post a class and offer to teach others your knowledge. People sign up. You get paid, and Skillshare takes a cut. They call it eduprenurial work; what a great word. You hustle your skill, you help people, you make a couple of bucks, a win-win-win.

A couple of hours after I spoke with my Facebook friend, it hit me.

What can you help people with? I ask myself.

Reinvention. Of course! What is the point of this blog? What is my book going to be about? I’m amazed it took me that long to figure it out.

I write about reinvention all the time, yet it took a random IM from a friend for me to remember the following:

1) I’m already a teacher.

2) I’m an online education specialist.

3) I counsel friends and associates on reinvention.

I should teach an online course on reinvention. Duh.  The answer was right under my nose, sitting there the whole time.

That’s the point. We all have a skill, we all have passions. Many of us are not realizing our passions in our current job, or we have been laid off and are bewildered on what to do next.

The answer lies within each of us. But sometimes our passion is stealthy- we don’t realize it’s inside us. Circumstance and life events cloud our perceptions of what we are able to do.

Look at 1, 2 and 3 above again. With all of that known information before me, I still didn’t realize instantly that I am quite capable and qualified to help others with the knowledge I have gained.

Helping you with reinvention will help me too. It will remind me to remember what I love to do. It’s a win-win!

If you’d like to take the course, you can sign up here.

So many people lent me their ears and their hearts when I was at rock bottom, wondering how the hell I was going to make a living after my career was taken away from me.

I found my way back to Good. I can help you do the same.
